Halving points for the final time: The Belgian Pro League play-off model enters end game

The End of an Era
The 2025–26 Jupiler Pro League season represents the closing chapter of Belgium's long-standing play-off model, a structure that has shaped the league's competitive landscape for over 15 years. Built around a mid-season reset, the format splits the table into three mini-leagues, with points halved and recalibrated before the decisive phase.
From a competitive design perspective, it compresses margins and increases variance. Title contenders see their leads reduced, mid-table sides re-enter European contention, and the league becomes a high-leverage environment where form, squad depth, and tactical adaptability carry greater importance. It rewards teams capable of solving different game states quickly, less about long-term consistency, more about optimisation across short sample sizes.
This campaign also marks a structural transition. From 2026–27, the Belgian Pro League will revert to a traditional 18-team format, removing play-offs entirely. European qualification will instead be determined by final league position, increasing the value of sustained performance and reducing the volatility that has defined this era. This shift aims to make the league feel more stable and rewarding for consistent effort, encouraging fans to trust the league's future direction.
For now, the framework remains:
Championship Group: Top six
European Group: 7th to 12th
Relegation Group: 13th to 16th
