Eredivisie 25/26 season preview
Craig Bradley's excitement levels are bubbling ahead of the new Dutch football season, here he tells us what we can expect in the coming months.
Last season’s Eredivisie title race was a rollercoaster. PSV bolted out of the blocks and had large lead at the top of the table as the league came to its winter break. However, they veered off course when play resumed which allowed Ajax to get into the slip stream, go past them, and with 5 matches to play have a 9 point lead. Ajax did more than veer off course - they flew off the track, collecting just 5 points from their last possible 15. PSV retook the lead on the penultimate match day of the season and went on to win their 26th championship by a solitary point.
Feyenoord finished 3rd behind PSV & Ajax. The Rotterdam club are currently trying to navigate their way through the Champions League qualifying round and beat Fenerbahce 2-1 on Wednesday night in the first leg of their tie.
FC Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles will represent the Netherlands in the Europa League courtesy of a 4th place finish for the former and the latter’s KNVB Beker triumph.
AZ Alkmaar enter the Conference League after coming out on top of the end of season playoffs.
At the bottom end of the table RKC Waalwijk and Almere City finished in the bottom two and suffered relegation. They’ll be replaced in the top flight by Volendam and Excelsior. And in a surprising end of season encounter Telstar, who finished 7th in the Eerste Divisie defeated Willem II in the promotion/relegation match over two legs and will play in the Eredivisie for the first time since 1978.

Jorthy Mokio deserves to stand alone here. One of the most talented teenagers on the planet. Mokio, just 17 is already a Belgian international and a legitimate runner in the chase for a place in their World Cup squad.
Mokio can already dominate Eredivisie midfield’s. There’s been a trend developing recently of Ajax losing their best talent before they’ve fully blossomed, Jorrel Hato for example, so it’ll be interesting to see how long they can hold onto Mokio for before he heads to one of the elite leagues.

Selected players of interest:
AZ’s conveyor belt of talent continues.
21-year-old keeper Rome Jayden Owusu-Oduro will be looking to build on last season. He has a chance of making the Netherlands World Cup squad at the end of the season if his linear development continues.
Expect to see more of attacking midfielder Kees Smit this season. Smit announced himself on the main stage by starring throughout the Netherlands recent Under 19 European Championship win. Lofty comparison but he gives me serious Kevin De Bruyne vibes. I think he’s on a fast track to the top.
AZ’s young wide options are super exciting. Ernest Poku (21), Ibrahim Sadiq (25), Mayckel Lahdo (22), Ro-Zangelo Daal (21), Isak Jensen (21) and Myron van Brederode (22) are all capable options. Hopefully one or two get a loan so eyes can be got on all of them.
Mexx Meerdink is one of the most promising young strikers in the Dutch game. I expect his minutes to increase this season, and as a by-product Troy Parrott’s may decrease

The two players I’m most keen to keep an eye on at Excelsior this season are centreback Casper Widell and striker Jeroldino Bergraaf.
Widell’s brother Melker signed for Swansea City in January and will be gracing Championship grounds this season. Widell has a chance of joining him. He stood out during Excelsior’s 2nd place finish last season and with him entering the final twelve months of his contract teams will be keeping a close eye on how he takes to the Eredivisie with a view to a future transfer.
Bergraaf is a Netherland under 19 international. He has a modern day #9 profile and is a player of high promise. Excelsior won’t be expecting to keep hold of him for long and will be hoping he can add to his value during this season.

Selected players of interest:
I’m intrigued by how Van Persie blends all his attacking array of talent into a cohesive unit. There’s a host of players I could talk about here but I’ll take the opportunity to put the spotlight on two of my favourite players from last season. Luciano Valente had his pick of the ‘Big 3’ after announcing himself at Groningen - his formed continued during the summer internationals. He has the talent and the personality to shine at the top of the table. The other player is young talent Leo Sauer who stood out during a loan at NAC Breda last season. Whether he goes out on a second loan or if he’s integrated into Feyenoord’s first team squad I expect the Slovak to continue progressing.
It’d be folly of me to not mention Givairo Read. The right back is probably the most talented teenager in his position in the world. He’s another that could go to USA 2026 and he’ll have all the elite clubs monitoring him.

The most interesting Fortuna Sittard player this season, in my opinion, is striker Kaj Sierhuis. The former Netherlands under 21 international was injury riddled last season. Fit again now, he goes into the new season with it the final one on his Fortuna contract. If he can prove he retains his talent and stays injury free then the 27-year-old may have another decent move left in him.
GO AHEAD EAGLES:
Last season: 7th
Manager: Melvin Boel
Transfers in:
Richonell Margaret (ST) - [RKC Waalwijk] - €1M
Melle Meulensteen (CM) - [Sampdoria] - €400K
Transfers out:
Oliver Antman (RW) - [Rangers] - €4.5M
Enric Llansana (CM) - [Anderlecht] - €1M
Selected players of interest:
Every season high calibre players depart Go Ahead Eagles after using the team as a springboard. One player that remains for now is Jakob Breum. He could play a critical role this season before, no doubt, moving onto to greater things.
Richonell Margaret arrives from relegated RKC Waalwijk and deserves to still be in the league.
Those of you who know me well will know how much I championed Milan Smit when at Cambuur, prior to him signing for GAE. I still believe he is an Eredivisie capable striker.

Jasper Meijster (GK) - [Cambuur] - Free
Thijs Oosting (AM) - [PEC Zwolle] - Loan
Romano Postema (ST) - [Emmen] - Loan
Selected players of interest:
Lets be truthful. Watching Groningen without Luciano Valente isn’t going to be as much fun. But there’s a few of players that still take my eye.
Thijmen Blokzijl is a 20-year-old centreback on the rise. 22-year-old midfielder Stije Resink had a great first season in Groningen, ending it as captain, after signing from Almere City. Another season of similar quality will see him on the move. And 20-year-old Jorg Schreuders is a hard working and talented right winger.

Selected players of interest:
Heerenveen have a young squad full of potential - they are well worth a watch.
The pick of the bunch may be academy product Oliver Braude. The right back is a Norwegian under 21 international. Gritty in the tackle and capable going forward.

Selected players of interest:
Time for honesty again. I only watched Breda last season in order to drool over Leo Sauer. If anybody is going to replicate his quality it could be Juho Talvitie who comes in on loan from Lommel. He showed glimpses of talent during a loan with PEC Zwolle last season.
NEC NIJMEGEN

Selected players of interest:
NEC have a host of fun players that you need on your radar.
Calvin Verdonk is 28 now and remains on the most underrated left backs in the league.
Dirk Proper is a deep-lying midfield playmaker who is small in stature but high in quality. He has an injury to overcome going into the season.
Sontje Hansen is a winger who can operate on either side and who is one of the most intense pressers in the league.
Youssef El-Kachati’s goals were the primary reason behind Telstar’s surprise promotion. It’ll be fascinating to see if he can replicate his finishing in the top flight,
And to show that value can be found at both ends of the age scale NEC bring back 36-year-old Jasper Cillessen in goal to replace Sunderland bound Robin Roefs plus 37-year-old winger Tjaronn Cherry who was still dazzling in the Belgian top flight last season despite his mature years.

Selected players of interest:
I’m interested to see how new striker Koen Kostons goes. I was a believer in him a couple of years ago when he was notching regularly for MVV Maastricht in the second tier. He got his transfer, to Paderborn but after a bright start the goals fizzled. He had a loan in Belgium last season and now gets a shot at the Eredivisie.

Selected players of interest:
As you’d expect, last season’s champions have a barrel load of interesting players. As only one was given attention at Ajax, I’ll take the same approach here.
USA striker Ricardo Pepi was developing into a top tier player last season when injury struck. With Luuk de Jong departing he should become the main man in Eindhoven this season and can waltz his way to becoming the league’s top scorer and cement a spot for the US at the World Cup.

19-year-old centreback Marvin Young is one to keep an eye on. Continual development will see him reach the top end of the table.
At the other end of the pitch Target Man Tobias Lauritsen remains at the club despite being the subject of transfer rumour.

Tom Overtoom (CM) - [Rijnburgse Boys] - Free
Selected players of interest:
Telstar are highly likely to be cut adrift at the bottom of the table this season. They’re going to need a spectacular season from Ronald Koeman JR in goal to stand any kind of chance at bot finishing in the bottom two.
Telstar have been great at recruiting from the Dutch amateur game in recent season and are trying to unearth another diamond to follow on from Zachari Eddachouri and Youssed El Kachati by bringing in a trio of players from Quick Boys.

Julien Mesbahi (CB) - [Emmen] - Loan
Selected players of interest:
Twente’s crown jewel is manager Joseph Oosting, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have players of interest.
Twente have one of my favourite right backs in the league in Bart van Rooij who has handled the step up from NEC Nijmegen without problem.
They also have an exciting left back option in Mats Rots who will be trying to establish himself as a starter after an impressive loan at Heracles last season.
Mats’ brother Daan is an impressive right winger.

Selected players of interest:
Utrecht have a stellar left back in Souffian El Karouani. Another player that is entering the final year of his contract. Buyers may well make a move this window.
It will be interesting to see if young left-footed right winger Miliano Jonathans can kick on this season now that he’s settled following his move from Vitesse in January

I like the shape of Feyenoord’s squad and don’t think they look any weaker for their departures. The managerial acumen of Robin Van Persie is the question mark, but he’s got plenty to work with.
PSV look to have taken a half step back to my eye. But the goals of Ricardo Pepi should make this a good title race.
I think AZ’s talented crop of youngster are capable of breaking up the Big 3 this season at the expense of an Ajax side entering another period of transition.
At the bottom end of the table I’m afraid I see the three promoted teams filling the bottom 3 places, although NAC Breda may give them something to shoot at.
