Could the Eredivisie lose it's Band 2 status?
Why the Netherlands top tier is in a bit of trouble
As Craig Bradley mentioned in his Netherlands update this month, the Dutch clubs have had a really poor campaign in UEFA tournaments.
The storied names of Dutch club football, Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord all departed the European club scene before the league phases were out.
PSV and Ajax finished 28th and 32nd in the Champions League league phase respectively, managing just four wins in 16 matches between them.
The Europa League was total Dutch carnage. Three Eredivisie clubs were in the league phase, but not one of them made it any further. Go Ahead Eagles were 28th, Feyenoord 29th, and Utrecht winless in 34th, just four wins from 24 matches between them.
The only Dutch club still in UEFA competition is AZ Alkmaar. They finished 14th in the league, but even then they had to survive a first leg loss in the play-off round to Armenians FC Noah. They now face Sparta Prague in the last 16.
It has certainly not been a vintage season for the Eredivisie clubs in the UEFA competitions, but what could this mean for the coefficient, and what could it mean for their current GBE Band 2 status?
