23 Head Coaches To Consider From Non-Domestic Markets
There have been four departures in the Championship in recent weeks, who can be found to replace them who qualifies for GBE?
Replacing a manager in the Championship is a tricky job.
As was highlighted by
's Ali Maxwell on their Monday pod this week, there are very few candidates who are currently out of work who have recent Championship experience:Michael Carrick
Russell Martin
Slaven Bilic
David Wagner
Jon Dahl Tomasson
The Championship has also gotten very strong in both finance and quality, so there is a certain level of quality expected from a head coach in return. Traditionally, head coaches who have been successful in European countries will have been seen as a coup for a second tier league, but many of these clubs, Middlesbrough and Southampton are two obvious examples, want to be Premier League clubs, and so even as a successful manager in a country like Sweden or Austria, is that a strong enough CV to impress the hierarchies at these clubs?
Southampton are an interesting case. They are part of the Sport Republic network, and a lot of their strategic decisions are made via a process involving extensive data and research gathering, and yet, as many people have established post-Will Still, they have had a pretty excruciating record of selecting their head coaches. Only Russell Martin has won more than two league matches as Southampton head coach, and he is one of the names linked with the vacancy once more.
However, we have seen appointments in the Championship from foreign counties for many years now. The rules are fully explained in our previous work on this topic, so I won’t repeat it here, but I have spent some time applying these rules to the head coaches that are out there, to see who may be of interest to these Championship clubs from outside of the domestic scene.
