Porto look to have the title wrapped up, thanks to the Lions of Sporting stumbling and dropping points at the league’s already relegated bottom club, AFS. A 1-1 draw all but sealed the title for the Dragons of Portugal’s second city, who are seven points clear of Benfica (who have nine points to play for), and ten clear of Sporting (who have 12 points to play for).

The Eagles of Benfica took flight during April, with a 2-1 win away at Sporting the biggest result of the month. A late brace from Franjo Ivanovic (ST, 21) also put the gloss on a 4-1 home victory over mid table Moreirense.

It wasn’t to be in Europe for Porto or Sporting, as both sides agonisingly went out by single goal margins to Nottingham Forest and Arsenal respectively.

Domestically, Sporting held out for a 0-0 stalemate at the Estadio do Dragao, to edge past Porto 1-0 on aggregate in the cup semi final. They will face second tier Torreense in the final, who have ambitions of being a top flight club next season.

Their arrival in the top flight should help put the spotlight on a number of interesting players for next season who will go from either not qualifying to play in England at all or needing an ESC slot to do so to potentially qualifying for a GBE work permit.

For those unfamiliar with the bandings, the FA and Home Office have agreed on six bandings in the men's game and three in the women's game, and each of these bandings are key for deciding how many points a player will get towards their GBE application.

The men's and women's games are also different on how many GBE points are actually required to be successful in getting a work permit. The men's game has a threshold of 15 points, whilst the women's game’s threshold is 24 points. However, it is important to note that this doesn't mean it is more difficult to get a GBE in the women's game, it is just that the criteria are weighted very differently.

The bandings have changed periodically in both the men's and women's game, but here I am asking the question, what if they were different?

I really enjoyed this piece from Nejc. In my mind there is a football transfer network out there and I think of it as almost a road traffic network, some roads are heavily used and congested, whilst others are dirt tracks that you wouldn't want to venture on.

In terms of the GBE Expert Hub, we are obviously heavily concerned with traffic of players INTO the UK, but to understand how that should work most efficiently one needs to have a fuller, more detailed understanding of the network as a whole.

Slovenia is a really interesting market for me because it is a Band 5 league, yet it is the lowest ranked Band 5 in the Opta Analyst rankings, and the UEFA coefficients. It is always difficult to know exactly how the wage structure ranks, but, to me, Slovenia is a market in which League One and League Two clubs could be scouting actively in to find some value.

The Role of the Slovenian League in Regional Talent Development

The Slovenian PrvaLiga has established itself as a competitive development league in Central Europe. Clubs such as NK Maribor and NK Olimpija Ljubljana regularly compete in European competitions and provide a platform for young players to gain international exposure.

Because Slovenia is a smaller market, the league often functions as a bridge between youth development and larger European leagues. Scouts from Austria, northern Italy, and Croatia frequently monitor matches in Slovenia, particularly for players who combine technical ability, tactical discipline, and physical development.

Title Fight

Another shuffle in the league table has resulted in Lech Poznan emerging at the top of the table with Zaglebie Lubin being unlikely runners-up at the moment. With a 5 point gap separating 5th place from the top of the table, every point is still crucial in the title race. Some of the frontrunners’ most interesting games in April include:

Bizarrely, on paper, Zaglebie have the easiest run of matches and have a perfect opportunity to catch up to Lech and possibly even overtake them if they slip up. However, the league has been full of so many surprises this season that it is impossible to know what might happen next.

The match between Lech and Jagiellonia will be very important and a win for Jagiellonia will cut down their deficit to just one point, not to mention paving the way for Zaglebie to have the opportunity to be level on points with Lech. Both Lech and Zaglebie have matches against Legia who are just outside the relegation zone, but have picked up just a little bit of form which makes it uncertain whether both teams will be able to brush Legia aside.

Another equally important match is Jagiellonia vs Gornik, currently sat in 3rd and 4th respectively and both have enjoyed spells at the top of the league this season. Still feeling the aftershock from Ousmane Sow’s departure, Gornik have been struggling to replicate their form from before the winter break but it all could change by the end of the month and they may be very close to the top if results go their way.

Major changes to the league table could still happen before the end of the season, as even the top 10 teams are in the running for Europe (or less realistically, the title), including the on form Motor who have 4 wins in their last 5.

The stories just continue to be written for the Portuguese teams in European competitions this year.

Following Benfica’s goalkeeper scoring a last-gasp goal against Real Madrid to send them through a few weeks ago, I didn’t think we could have much more excitement in the Champions League or Europa League. Sporting and Braga had other ideas, overturning respective 3-0 and 2-0 first leg defeats, as both clubs progressed to the quarter final stage.

Following a poor display in Norway, The Lions found themselves 3-0 down to a Bodo/Glimt side who had beaten last year’s finalists Inter Milan in the previous round. Portugal’s current champions put on an excellent display in the second leg, creating an xG of 3.77, and 9 big chances, to win 5-0 (5-3 on agg.) and move onto a mouthwatering quarter final with Arsenal. The icing on the cake was Rafael Nel (20, ST) scoring on only his third first-team appearance for the club.

The next day, Braga decided they liked what they’d seen from Sporting, and went about dismantling Ferencvaros in a similar way (4-0, 4-2 on agg.). Rodrigo Zalazar (26, RW) put on an excellent attacking display, causing constant problems down the wing. Mainly because the Libertadores is granted the same level of status within the GBE regulations as the UEFA Champions League. Therefore, a participation in this competition, especially if in combination with domestic minutes in Argentina (Band 3), Brazil (B3), and Colombia (B4), means an almost certain GBE pass for those players.

Therefore, the question is, who should we be watching out for? Where does the value lie?

It should also be stated that any player who has played in the qualification rounds of the competition is also ESC eligible, so there are interesting recruitment options here everywhere you look.

January 13th was the day that I realized two things:

1. There was a clause in the ESC regulations which stated that:

   

2. That the percentage of minutes being played by English players in the Premier League was actually down below 25%

It would seem as though I am not the only person to have noticed this, as you would hope! As per the reporting from Matt Slater in The Athletic:

There is an important caveat buried in the small print of the ESC deal: the FA can scrap it if EQP minutes fall below 25 per cent for the season in any league. And that is the lever the FA is threatening to pull right now.

So, some EFL clubs are wondering why their access to ESC talent is under threat because Premier League clubs have bought too many foreign players, and the only solution is to let Premier League clubs lend more of their stockpiled young English players to EFL clubs, further disincentivising EFL clubs from investing in their own academies, and staging more games against under-21 sides that nobody pays to watch.

There is much to dig into and wade through here, and that is what I want to look to do in this piece.

This is an opinion piece, backed up by data and research, but is not intent on building up an agenda or tearing down the establishment. I want to concentrate on the facts and then give my educated opinion on where we are at with regard to GBE and ESC.

As the clause in the regs suggests though, there should have been reviews of the ESC system in any season where the percentage of minutes for EQP (English Qualified Player) was below 30%, so this begs the question, what has happened to the percentage of minutes for English players over the last few seasons?
